Our proposal formed part of the St. Martin’s Courtyard Development, a major project for the urban regeneration of a two-acre site on the western edge of London’s Covent Garden. The existing island site comprised a typical mixture of redundant and underused buildings including a former NCP car park. We received Planning Permission to transform this space into a new public area enclosed by a new mixed-use retail, leisure, office and residential development.
The Courtyard Building within St. Martin’s Courtyard is the focal point of the new space: A highly articulated glazed façade, composed of transparent, opaque and printed glass forms a definitive feature, terminating the new vista from Long Acre. This dramatic glazing is set against a simple brick and stone backdrop which reveals retail and restaurant spaces. Set above these, on the third storey, there is studio style office space. A dramatically cantilevering canopy completes the composition.
